My association with Arsenal began, to my Chelsea supporting father’s disgust, with Billy Wright, who had been my football idol as a lad. This was not a happy period fir Arsenal, though I could have cared less. If Arsenal was good enough for Billy Wright, it was good enough for me.

Now into my seventies, and having lived abroad for almost 45 years, I don’t get to watch the Gunners much these days. The team occasionally appears on Sportsnet Ontario, depending on who the flavour of the month is they are playing (T.V. ratings and advertising dollars decide on the lineups). I have not been to Highbury since my honeymoon, in September, 1969, a 2-2 draw with Manchester United in which the police watched the game while the thugs slashed each other with razor blades in full view of my wife and I. We left at half time, never to return.

But I still support Arsenal (I admit to having a soft spot for Wolves for old times sake) and no one else in football. I long for another League Championship and F.A.Cup. This year for the latter? I fervently hope so.

Again, a terrific read, Anushree. Thanks.
